An argument in a North Hollywood neighborhood Sunday escalated into a fight that left one man dead and a second man critically injured, police said.

Jose Cruz, 21, of North Hollywood died shortly after midnight, about three hours after police found him and a second man bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds, sprawled on the sidewalk at the corner of Stagg Street and Irvine Avenue, Los Angeles Police Detective Mike Coffey said. The second man, Felipe Hernandez, 22, of Pacoima was in critical condition at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Neighbors called police shortly before 9 p.m. after hearing yelling and gunshots from a group of men, Coffey said. The other men had fled by the time police arrived, he said.
