Heisman Trophy winner Charles White, who went from a reserve running back with the Rams to the NFL rushing leader in 1987, announced his retirement today.

White, 31, played with the Rams for four seasons after being released by the Cleveland Browns in 1985. The 5-foot, 10-inch 193-pounder finished his NFL career with 3,075 yards rushing on 780 carries and 23 touchdowns. He also caught 114 passes for 862 yards and one touchdown.

“I have made a decision to retire from football,” White said in a statement released by the Rams. “After discussions with Coach (John) Robinson, I believe the Rams are looking to younger players. Although I would have a chance to compete, I feel it is time to step aside. At this time, I do not want to relocate with another team.”
