Long Beach : Ordinance Banning Sale of Assault Weapons Approved

Share

The Long Beach City Council has given final approval to an ordinance banning the local sale of semiautomatic assault weapons such as AK-47s and Uzis.

Only one store in Long Beach is known to regularly sell such rifles, which have gained a measure of notoriety since a gunman used an AK-47 to kill five Stockton schoolchildren earlier this year.

Similar to bans recently adopted in several other Los Angeles County cities, the Long Beach ordinance differs in one key respect: it does not outlaw possession of the rapid-fire rifles, only their sale. The measure was approved on second reading by a 6-1 vote. Councilman Jeffrey A. Kellogg voted no, and Councilmen Warren Harwood and Ray Grabinski were absent.
