The cloud of acrid smoke that has been burning eyes and rasping throats in South Florida cleared away as the wind shifted and firefighters contained the wildfires that produced the choking fumes. By late afternoon, all the fires were either out or controlled, said Seb Farina, a spokesman for the state forestry division. “It was a good day,” he said. “The winds didn’t get up and the humidity did, so we were able to do a lot of work. We’re just mopping up now. The threat to Everglades National Park is over.” On Tuesday, fires burned near the park and in four other spots in west Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Winds spread the acrid blanket of smoke over Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
