European aerosol producers have agreed to reduce the use of ozone-damaging chlorofluorocarbons by 90% by the end of next year, the European Community’s executive commission said today.

A statement said the commission has signed a voluntary agreement with the Federation of European Aerosol Manufacturers that went further than the 1988 U.N.-inspired Montreal Protocol committing signatories to a 20% cut by 1993.

Under the EC agreement, aerosol makers who continue using CFCs after the end of 1990 will label their products “Contains CFC Which Damages Ozone,” the commission said.

CFCs contribute to the warming of the Earth by thinning the ozone layer in the so-called “greenhouse effect.”
