Weekend Highlights for L.A. International Film Festival

Share

The American Film Institute Los Angeles International Film Festival continues at the Cineplex Odeon Century Plaza Cinemas this weekend. Highlights from today’s and Sunday’s program follow.

SUNDAY

‘Painted Faces’

Hong Kong, 1988, 118 minutes 8:55 p.m. Hong Kong’s premier action movie superstars Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan were once boy acrobats in a Peking Opera troupe; this delightful biography shows us young classmates Sammo and “Big Nose” (Chan’s nickname) schooled in the rigorous Peking techniques by their dedicated teacher, Yu Chan Huan (played by Hung). Writer-director Alex Law gets tremendous detail, energy and sympathy here; his movie has some of the warmth and kick of ol’ Hollywood show-biz bios like “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” RECOMMENDED.
