Twenty-four Los Angeles County schools are among the 233 winners of the California Distinguished Elementary School Award announced Friday by the state Department of Education.

Several criteria were used to evaluate the schools, including pupil attendance rates and test scores, state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig said. Schools were judged against those with the same grade levels and similar socio-economic background. A team of educators also visited each campus and interviewed teachers and students.
