Ernest E. Williams, 72, a retired newspaper editor of the Ft. Wayne News-Sentinel in Indiana and the man Vice President Dan Quayle said was the first to encourage him to enter politics. Williams was active in local and state Republican politics and, the vice president recalled, “It was Ernie’s idea first that I run for Congress in 1976.” Williams joined the News-Sentinel as a reporter in 1945 and was named editor in 1966. He retired in 1982. In Ft. Wayne on Sunday of complications after cardiac bypass surgery.
