Man Killed as Car Plunges Off Road, Bursts Into Flames
A man driving his car down narrow Silverado Canyon Road plunged over the side and 75 feet down an embankment, where his car burst into flames Friday night.
The man, who was identified only as a Silverado Canyon resident, was declared dead at the scene. His car, a red 1987 Pontiac Fiero, was destroyed, according to the California Highway Patrol. Coroner’s officials said Saturday that they would await dental comparisons before positively identifying the badly burned body.
A CHP spokeswoman said the crash occurred in Silverado Canyon about 10 p.m. about half a mile east of Black Star Canyon Road, where Silverado Canyon Road is atop a 200-foot embankment. She said there was no indication of how fast the car was traveling when it went off the north edge of the road.
The Orange County Fire Department said the car came to rest on its roof and was entirely in flames when firefighters arrived.
