IN BRIEF : Archibald Hired as Tempe Assistant

Lynn Archibald, the former head basketball coach at the University of Utah who also served on coaching staffs at USC and Cal State Long Beach, was hired today as an assistant coach at Arizona State.

Archibald is the first member of the staff being compiled by new Sun Devil head Coach Bill Frieder, who left Michigan during the NCAA tournament.

Archibald compiled a 98-85 record in six seasons at Utah, leading the Utes to a Western Athletic Conference co-championship in 1985-86. Archibald, fired after this past season, was an assistant at Utah in 1982-83 before becoming head coach. He was head coach at Idaho State from 1977-82 and was an assistant at USC (1976-77), Nevada-Las Vegas (1973-76), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (1972-73) and Cal State Long Beach (1971-72).
