Striped Bass at Silverwood

Largemouth bass are spawning and cooperating with fishermen at most Southland reservoirs, but at Lake Silverwood it’s the striped bass that are bending the rods.

Alan Cole of Lancaster caught a 38 1/2-pound striper, Kenny Meyer of San Bernardino a 32-pounder, and Neil Sinsabaugh of Victorville a 25-pound striper.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped bass biting best through channel and near spillway. Mike Lewis, Yucaipa, 20 1/4-pound striper. Largemouth bass bite strong, biting in shallows. Crappie biting at Crappie Rock and Cleghorn Cove.

WILLOW BEACH--Trout biting primarily upriver, but striped bass providing most action, biting downstream on anchovies and artificial lures.

LAKE MEAD--Striped bass averaging two to four pounds, biting best in Overton Arm and Vegas Wash. Anchovies best bet and chumming necessary. Largemouth bass to four pounds and small catfish picking up.

BULLHEAD CITY--Striped bass running in river, averaging two to four pounds. Trout slow. Lake: Largemouth bass providing most action, biting on waterdogs and crawfish. Trout slow.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina picking up, biting best at Bombay Beach, Niland Marina and Red Hill. Fish averaging 12 pounds. Tilapia and mudsuckers working best. Croaker biting best at Bombay Beach. Sargo being taken off jetties, primarily with nightcrawlers and corn.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout: Trollers using five colors and needlefish lures catching some limits, especially in Santa Cruz Bay. Largemouth bass spawning, biting on surface in early morning. East end best area. Catfish averaging 10-12 pounds biting at Santa Cruz Bay and island. Mackerel best bet. Crappie and bluegill poor.

LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass biting at Station Canyon area. Brown plastic worms at 5-15 feet working best. Ron Davis, Ventura, 12-4 bass. Ed Adams, Ventura, eight-pound bass. Average 3-5. Catfish picking up, to 12 pounds. Crappie and redear perch biting at Wadleigh Arm and Dead Horse Canyon.

LAKE PIRU--Trout recently planted, biting best throughout lake. Largemouth bass biting in shallows along north shoreline and marina. Eric Rangel, Fillmore, 8 1/2-pound bass. Ben Kurzawski, Panorama City, 5 1/2-pound bass, released.

BIG BEAR--Trout biting throughout lake, with several limits reported. Most baits working.
