Duarte : Foam Container Ban

Share

A draft of an ordinance to prohibit restaurants from using plastic foam containers will be reviewed May 17 by the Community Services Commission.

The city has been considering restricting polystyrene food wrappers because the material is not biodegradable and is difficult to recycle. The most commonly used form of polystyrene is manufactured with chloroflourocarbons that cause the atmosphere’s ozone layer to deteriorate, said Terry Fitzgerald, Duarte’s environmental consultant Terry Fitzgerald.

The five-member advisory commission will make a recommendation on the proposal, which the City Council will discuss at a later public hearing, Assistant City Manager Manuel Ontal said.

Similar ordinances have been passed in Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
