The City Council voted today to expand the city’s no-smoking ordinance to private auditoriums and meeting rooms where public business is conducted.

The council voted 11 to 0 to approve the ordinance that will outlaw smoking during public meetings in private buildings.

“What we did was to close a gap in the existing law so that it will be illegal to smoke in any place where public business is being conducted,” said Councilwoman Ruth Galanter.

The earlier law had applied only to publicly owned buildings.

Galanter said a number of public agencies occasionally hold meetings in privately owned buildings, such as the Planning Commission which meets at the Women’s Club in Van Nuys, a facility previously not covered by the law.
