BASEBALL MISCELLANY : NAMES AND NUMBERS

Share

The Rookies: Some of baseball’s most touted freshmen have experienced a rough start. Through Friday, Milwaukee Brewer shortstop Gary Sheffield was batting .205, Seattle Mariner center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., .204, New York Met second baseman Gregg Jefferies .154, Oakland Athletic right fielder Felix Jose .125, Detroit Tiger first baseman Torey Lovullo .093, and Montreal Expo pitcher Randy Johnson was 0-3 with a 7.13 earned-run average.

Rotation: Injuries have forced the St. Louis Cardinals to rebuild their starting staff with three pitchers who have won a total of three major league games: Cris Carpenter two, Ken Hill one and Don Heinkel none.

Streak: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night, 4-3, on the unlikely combination of an error by Ozzie Smith in the ninth inning and erratic relief pitching by Todd Worrell. It was the first time the Cardinals lost a home game they led going into the ninth since June 19, 1986, a streak of 102 games. The last loss also went to Worrell and stemmed from an error by Smith in the ninth.

Mismatch: With his 8-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians Wednesday night, Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox has an 11-1 record against the Indians with a 1.90 earned-run average.

Hot Corner: Five Chicago White Sox third basemen made 46 errors last year. Eddie Williams was acquired from the Cleveland Indians to solve the problem, but Williams made five errors through 14 games, projecting to 58 for the season.

Bad Trades: General Manager John Schuerholz of the Kansas City Royals has been heavily criticized for the deal that sent pitcher David Cone to the New York Mets for catcher Ed Hearn. And there is still no salvation for Schuerholz in the trade that sent Danny Jackson to the Cincinnati Reds for shortstop Kurt Stillwell. Stillwell missed the final 5 1/2 weeks of the 1988 season with a pulled abdominal muscle, has missed seven games of the 1989 season with a thigh pull and, through Thursday, was 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position, 3 for 22 overall and had four errors, as many as second baseman Frank White made all last year.

Turnover: The Chicago Cubs’ recent seven-game winning streak was their longest since a seven-game streak in 1983, when their lineup for win No. 7 was Mel Hall, lf; Ryne Sandberg, 2b; Bill Buckner, 1b; Leon Durham, cf; Ron Cey, 3b; Keith Moreland, rf; Jody Davis, c; Larry Bowa, ss; Ferguson Jenkins, p. Only Sandberg remains.

Slump: Detroit Tiger left-hander Frank Tanana has not won since Aug. 19, a span of 11 starts in which he is 0-7 with four no decisions.

Slump II: The Milwaukee Brewers were hitting .223 as a team through Thursday with seven of 15 position players batting less than .200. Said Manager Tom Trebelhorn “We’re not swinging the bats like we’re capable of--at least I hope we’re not.”
