Israeli soldiers shot and wounded 53 Palestinians during stone-throwing protests that erupted in the occupied territories after a call from underground leaders to escalate the anti-Israeli uprising, Arab reports said. The escalation marked Islam’s first victory over unbelievers 13 centuries ago. Arab hospital staff members said the high number of wounded was the result of at least a dozen clashes, which were concentrated in the Gaza Strip. Also, in the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian accused of collaborating with Israeli authorities was found dead. He had been decapitated and stabbed, Arab reports said. More than 400 Palestinians have been killed since the uprising began in December, 1987. About 15 Israelis also have died.
