New Troupe at Long Beach Center

Share

A new professional theater company will occupy the 862-seat Center Theatre at the Long Beach Convention Center next season.

Called the Long Beach Repertory Theatre, the company is an outgrowth of the 99-seat International City Theatre, which has presented productions on the campus of Long Beach City College since January, 1985. The smaller theater will continue to operate, and Shashin Desai will be the artistic director of both companies.

The new theater will operate on an Equity contract, still to be negotiated, and Desai hopes to employ a company of 20 actors for the entire season.

The opening season will consist of nine performances each of four productions, scheduled to open in September, December, February and May. Although Desai is still obtaining rights to the shows he wants to do, he said that a revival of the International City Theatre production of Kevin Heelan’s “Distant Fires”--which won two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards this year--is “definite” for February.
