The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of USC Prof. Fernando Torres-Gil to the city’s Planning Commission.

Torres-Gil, 40, is an associate professor of gerontology and public administration at the university and earlier served for three years as staff director of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Aging. He will serve for the remainder of outgoing Commissioner Carmen Estrada’s term, which ends in 1992.

Most council members had high praise for Torres-Gil, but others warned that his performance on the commission will be closely watched. “This Planning Commission, for some time, has been too slow to respond to problems as they have arisen,” Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky said. He urged Torres-Gil to “err on the side of being aggressively protective of the environment,” much like Estrada, who was a frequent dissenting voice on the planning panel.
