A local meat retailer has agreed to pay $22,000 in fines and investigation expenses to settle claims that it repeatedly violated state health standards, the Orange County district attorney’s office announced Wednesday.

County prosecutors said that a 2-year investigation by local and state officials uncovered violations by Royal Gourmet Meats that included the sale of meat by standards other than weight, short-weight sales and misrepresentation of the products’ cut and retail names.

Investigators uncovered the alleged violations, which led to a lawsuit against Royal Gourmet, at the firm’s retail outlets in Fullerton and La Habra and during outdoor sales barbecues around the county, the district attorney’s office said.

Steven McGlawn, owner of the Santa Fe Springs-based catering and retail firm, said in an interview that his company is guilty of no wrongdoing and that the charges resulted only from a misunderstanding of state standards.
