American History, a Saga of Immigrants

I was fascinated by the diversity of opinions with regard to comments (April 23) by former Central Intelligence Agency Director William Colby and Westminster Councilman Frank Fry Jr. Lily M. Lewis and Jennifer T. Moore seem to forget the history of this country.

Immigrants have come to America in waves for many generations. It was the English, Irish, Germans, Italians, Eastern Europeans (and others) who created this country. Southeast Asians are only the latest wave of people contributing, yes contributing, to our diversity. We are not a uniform, same color, same religion society nor do I expect or hope we will ever be. At some point we were all foreigners here.

I was further fascinated by your story on April 23, “San Clemente High School Senior Reaches Citizen Bee Finals.” The names included Margaret Kuo, Stephanus Philip, Ken Kuniyuki and Pedro Cardenas. That is where our future leaders come from: a diversity of ethnic backgrounds but all Americans.
