Wal-Mart Stores Inc. withdrew Listerine from its shelves in 26 states because an Arkansas woman reported that her mouth was burned after using the product, officials said. However, tests showed the mouthwash was not contaminated. The incident was believed to be isolated and the woman reported only mouth irritation, a Wal-Mart spokesman said in Bentonville, Ark. The suspect bottle, and others gathered from Wal-Mart stores, were flown for testing to the Morris Plains, N.J., headquarters of Listerine’s manufacturer, Warner-Lambert Co. Wal-Mart said initial tests “show it’s just Listerine.” The mouthwash is marketed as an antiseptic and can cause an astringent, tingly sensation, the company said.
