SDSU Men Blank UTEP in WAC Tennis Tournament

The San Diego State men’s tennis team shut out Texas El Paso, 9-0, in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament Monday in Albuquerque, N.M.

Aztec Joe McDonough defeated Emeka Igbenebor, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, then teamed with Scott Del Mastro to defeat Igbenebor and Patrick Ekstrand in doubles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

SDSU (13-18) meets top-seeded Utah (19-10) today in a second-round match.

BASEBALL

UCSD (23-15) defeated visiting Biola, 4-3, behind Gary Fessia, who was two for four with two RBIs, and Dave Ligerman, who homered in the ninth.

J.J. Fisher (7-1) went the distance to pick up the victory, with seven strikeouts and no walks. Jay Acox hit a bases-empty home run for Biola (18-25) in the ninth.

UCSD is ranked eighth in Division III.

COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Neal Meyer of Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.) High has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of San Diego.

Meyer (6-feet-3) averaged 26.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.4 steals per game. He set school records for points in a game (43) and career points (1,870) and shooting percentage in a season (62.4) and career (60.5).

Todd McTrusty, a linebacker from Helix High, has announced he will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. McTrusty (6-feet-3, 195) is a National Football Foundation scholar/athlete. He chose Penn over Occidental and USD.

Two players from Helix’s varsity baseball team have signed national letters of intent to attend Division I schools next year.

Rich Haar, a shortstop with a .404 batting average and 21 stolen bases in 23 attempts, signed with UC Santa Barbara. Jason Ledford, a first baseman with a .398 average and 19 RBIs, signed with San Diego State.
