Firm to Close More Plants: National Semiconductor Corp., in its continuing efforts to cut operating costs, announced that it will close a plant in Seoul, South Korea, and consolidate two Singapore factories. The company, which has closed several operations in the last year, said its latest move would reduce duplication among manufacturing facilities created by the 1987 acquisition of Fairchild Semiconductor. The firm plans to transfer the operations performed in its Seoul factory to other plants in Asia by June 1. About 250 workers will lose their jobs, said company spokeswoman Mary Coady. There will not be any significant loss of the 2,900 jobs in Singapore, she said. National Semiconductor assembles and tests a variety of microelectronic products in its Seoul and Singapore facilities.
