Ivanhoe School Marks 100th Anniversary

Share

Parents, administrators and alumni of a Silver Lake elementary school Friday will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the school’s founding.

Ivanhoe School has held classes at the same site, 2828 Herkimer St., since it was founded in a two-story farmhouse in 1889. It is one of eight Los Angeles schools that date to 1889 or earlier and one of 28 founded before 1900.

Today’s Ivanhoe School building was completed in 1941. It is the third successive building to be built on the site as the school’s population grew. About 350 children are now enrolled.

The 6:30 p.m. celebration is expected to include appearances by Los Angeles City Councilmen John Ferraro and Michael Woo, and a display of pictures, books, report cards and school equipment dating from the early history of the school. A group of parents and alumni has been researching the school’s founding for months in preparation for the event.
