Norwalk : College Districting Proposal to Appear on Nov. 7 Ballot
- Share via
The County Committee on School District Organization has unanimously approved a proposal to divide the Cerritos Community College District into seven trustee areas.
The proposal will be placed on the Nov. 7 ballot. If voters approve, the plan will go into effect in 1991.
Ten people spoke before the committee on Wednesday, all in favor. Speakers included board member Ruth Banda, Hawaiian Gardens Councilwoman Kathleen Navejas and Little Lake School District board member Alex Morales.
Cerritos College trustees now are chosen at large from throughout the district, which serves Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs and parts of Lakewood, Long Beach and South Gate.
In February, the seven-member college board voted 4 to 3 in favor of creating the trustee areas. The new procedure is expected to increase representation of ethnic minorities, especially Latinos, on the board. Each of the areas would elect one trustee. Banda is the board’s only Latino member.
Support for trustee areas started last fall when board member John Moore, a resident of Cerritos, was appointed to fill a vacancy.
