Presidential assailant John W. Hinckley Jr. wants to leave the country with his fiancee, says assassination expert Mark Lane, whom Hinckley has asked to represent him.

Lane said Hinckley, 33, wants to start a new life abroad with former mental patient Leslie deVeau, who was found innocent by reason of insanity in the 1982 shotgun slaying of her 10-year-old daughter.

“Together they would like to go to some other country and promise they’ll never return,” Lane said in an interview Tuesday night. “He wants to go abroad and try to live a normal life.”

He said Hinckley, who was found innocent by reason of insanity in the attempted assassination of former President Ronald Reagan, did not specify which country he wants to live in.
