STAGE REVIEW : ‘I Do! I Do!’ Just Doesn’t
Robert Morse directed the “I Do! I Do!” that’s at Donald O’Connor’s Family Theatre in Studio City. But his revival of this musical chronicle of a marriage, by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, lacks the personality that Morse projects as an actor--or, for that matter, any other kind of personality.
The opening scene is especially silly. The two middle-aged actors who make up the cast play virginal newlyweds, barely out of their teens, on their wedding night. It’s excruciating.
As they approach their real ages, Jack Hagarty and especially Lisa Donovan fare better. Donovan has much the stronger voice.
Hagarty is harder to take, partially because his character is such a tedious boor. This show shares with “Kiss Me, Kate” (currently playing in Pasadena) a credibility gap over whether the woman really would stand by her man.
