OTTAWA —
Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 7.8% in April from 7.5% the previous month, raising fears of an economic recession, the government reported today.
Jobless rolls rose to 1,046,000 from 1,010,000 in March, according to Statistics Canada, the federal agency.
Opposition parties said in the House of Commons the figures show the economy is slowing down and that the government’s new budget, with its range of tax hikes and spending cuts, will push the country to the brink of recession.
