A former Morton Thiokol Inc. purchasing agent was sentenced today to a year and a day in federal prison for taking kickbacks from defense subcontractors in return for business with the aerospace company.

U.S. District Judge David Sam sentenced John E. Ward on his January, 1988, guilty pleas to three counts as part of a plea bargain with government attorneys. In exchange, prosecutors dropped 24 other counts. Morton Thiokol was not charged in the kickback scheme.
