The University of San Diego and San Diego State women’s tennis teams Thursday were selected to the NCAA team championships to be held next Wednesday through Friday in Gainesville, Fla.

This will be the first appearance for USD, ranked 14th in the nation. No. 16 SDSU, which finished fourth in 1984, will be making its fifth trip since 1982.

In first-round matches Wednesday, USD (seeded 15th) will play Tennessee (17), and SDSU (16) will play William & Mary (20).

Jennifer Larking, ranked 30th in singles, leads the Toreras (17-7). Freshman Stacey Martin of Tennessee (17-6) is ranked second with a 32-1 record. No. 72 Sondra Mitchell plays No. 1 singles for the Aztecs (13-9), No. 56 Danielle Durak for William & Mary (17-2).

If both teams win in the first round, SDSU will play top-seeded Stanford and USD second-seeded Florida. The Toreras and Aztecs could only meet in the championship of the 20-draw, single-elimination tournament.

Point Loma Nazarene College is tied for first with Westmont College after the second round of the NAIA District 3 tournament in Santa Barbara. PLNC’s Kim Wright and Shannon Anderson advanced to today’s semifinals in singles and doubles, and Aileen Fermin and Dede Walker advanced in doubles.

MEN’S GOLF

San Diego State’s Tim Todd and Wayne Kumagai shot 71s, one behind Air Force’s Chris Gough, to give the Aztecs a first-round lead in the Western Athletic Conference championships at the University of New Mexico South Golf Course in Albuquerque.

SDSU, at 290, leads Texas El Paso (291) and New Mexico (293) in the 54-hole tournament. Bill Coleman added a 72 and Dave Schnider a 76 for the Aztecs, who are coached by Denny Stolz, the former football coach.
