The Previn-Fleischmann Controversy
Regarding the recent articles by Martin Bernheimer and others on the resignation of Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Andre Previn:
There are two groups of victims in the Previn-Philharmonic fiasco.
One group sits in the orchestra, dedicated artists who have been brought to world-class levels and worldwide recognition by former music director Carlo Maria Giulini and Previn. They deserve the full-time artistic vision of a full-time music director, not the part-time ministration of a parade of guest conductors screened and employed by an autocratic administrator.
The other victims are, of course, the audience. We deserve more than revolving-door maestros.
The real question facing the Philharmonic board is this: Given the notorious reputation of managing director Ernest Fleischmann, just who among the leading conductors would be willing to put up with his management methods?
Maybe the wrong guy resigned.
