Broeske’s brilliantly poignant piece was at least in a minor way marred by the description of the protagonist Salamo Arouch’s home town as “the Greek village of Salonika.”

Salonika is the second largest city in Greece, with a population of more than 500,000. More than 50,000 Greek-Jewish inhabitants of that important Mediterranean seaport were deported and exterminated by the Nazis in World War II.
