A public hearing on a proposed ordinance to restrict use of Jet Skis and motorized surfboards along the Newport Beach shoreline will be held Monday by the City Council. Under the measure, beach launching of the vessels would be prohibited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1 to Sept. 30. When the vessels are operated outside of those months, they would be allowed no nearer the shore than 100 feet seaward of the surf line.
The city’s Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department said that all other county cities with beachfront homes bar Jet Skis all year, and drafted the ordinance to avoid conflicts between swimmers, surfers and Jet Ski riders.
