Need for Electric Cars

Share

I am writing in response to the letter from Leon Wolff (April 20) who asked, regarding electric cars, “What’s the catch?”

The catch is that there is a lot of money invested in the status quo, namely, oil companies and gas car manufacturers. Electric cars will be mass marketed when the public creates a demand for them, and not until.

In the meantime, however, hundreds of Californians have already converted their subcompact gas cars to electric power. The average range is about 57 miles on a single charge, and the average top speed is about 65 m.p.h. As Wolff said, it’s an ideal in-town car: clean, quiet, economical, and extremely low-maintenance (no tune-ups).

Electric cars are charged mostly overnight, during off-peak hours. Southern California Edison alone could absorb 600,000 electric cars without expanding capacity.
