Santa Ana : Man Suspected in Fatal Shooting Is Arrested

A 22-year-old Santa Ana man was being held Monday in lieu of $250,000 bail in connection with the July, 1988, death of a Santa Ana man who was shot in the head as he sat on the tailgate of a pickup truck, police said.

Police said Tuan Ahn Truong was arrested Saturday afternoon in the 300 block of South Newhope Street, the spot where 22-year-old Ahn Hung Tran was shot as he sat talking with two friends on the back of a truck.

Police Department spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said witnesses who were friends of the victim had identified Truong as the gunman. Police issued a warrant for Truong’s arrest last July but did not know his whereabouts, Thomas said.

Thomas said Truong was arrested about 2:40 p.m. after officers responded to a call of shots being fired into the air in the neighborhood. Officers found Truong and four others and asked them about the shots. Thomas said Truong initially gave police a phony name but that he was identified through fingerprints.

Thomas said that in the July incident, Truong allegedly fired several shots at the three on the truck and ordered Tran to get off. When Tran did not, Thomas said, Truong allegedly walked up to him and shot him.

Truong was being held on suspicion of murder at the Orange County Jail in Santa Ana, Thomas said.
