Motorcycle deaths in the state dropped to 600 during 1988, the California Highway Patrol reported. The CHP said that was the lowest total of the decade and 19% below the 1987 figure of 741. CHP Commissioner M. J. Hannigan credited, in part, the state’s Motorcyclist Safety Program, which has trained more than 10,000 riders since it began in July, 1987. To get a driver’s license, a motorcyclist under age 18 must complete a course at one of the state’s 45 training sites. Motorcycle accident injuries, said the agency, declined from 24,662 in 1987 to 20,928 last year.
