President Proclaims Asian-Pacific Week
President Bush paid tribute on Monday to the nearly 4 million Americans of Asian and Pacific ancestry, saying they enrich the nation and have a “soaring love of freedom.”
He proclaimed Asian-Pacific-American Heritage Week at a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, where he also announced his nomination of Julia Chang Bloch, of Chinese ancestry, to be ambassador to Nepal and Kyo Jhin, a Korean-American, to be chief counsel for advocacy in the Small Business Administration.
The President said that while he was the U.S. envoy to China in 1975, he and his wife, Barbara, saw that the center of Asian values is the family.
“The Asian-Pacific community has a special place in my heart,” Bush said, then quoted a Chinese proverb: “One generation plants the trees, another gets the shade.”
