Mistrial Declared in Shooting of Guard

A judge declared a mistrial Thursday after jurors deadlocked 11 to 1 in favor of convicting a man charged in the shooting of an armored car guard in Glendale.

The jury foreman told Pasadena Superior Court Judge Terry Smerling on Thursday morning that jurors could not reach a verdict on attempted murder and attempted robbery charges against Alfred Anthony Giordano, 26, of Pomona.

Giordano is charged with pulling the trigger in the failed Dec. 31, 1987, robbery. His brother, Peter Paul Giordano, was charged with driving the getaway car. Peter Giordano stood trial with his brother on the same charges but was acquitted Tuesday.

The shooting left the armored car guard, Howard White, paralyzed.

In interviews outside the courtroom, several jurors said they spent more than two days trying to persuade the lone dissenter to convict Alfred Giordano. But they said the one juror believed an alibi witness called by the defense, who testified that Alfred Giordano was at her house when the shooting took place.

Alfred Giordano is being held in Los Angeles County Jail. Deputy Dist. Atty. Jo Ann Glidden said she was evaluating whether to retry Giordano.
