From Times staff and wire service reports

A motorcyclist was killed this morning when he tried to beat a red light at a Canoga Park intersection and struck a car making a turn, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Anthony Ewalt, 24, of Northridge was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, Officer Richard Neuenschwander said.

Ewalt was heading west on Saticoy Street shortly before 7 a.m. when, according to witnesses, he tried to beat the red light at Tampa Avenue, Neuenschwander said. The car he struck was making a left turn as the light was changing, the officer said.

Ewalt apparently tried to stop by laying the motorcycle on its side, but its momentum sent him into the side of the car, Neuenschwander said.

The driver of the car, Nasaria Frias, 30, of Canoga Park, was not hurt. No traffic citations were issued.
