San Diego police arrested a 32-year-old man Friday in connection with four bank robberies over the last six weeks, authorities said.

Using a Nevada license plate number given to them by a witness to one of the robberies, detectives found a parked car believed to have been used in the robberies, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Richard Allen Chandler of San Diego was arrested about noon as he came out of the Home Depot in the 6600 block of University Avenue, Robinson said. Chandler’s brother-in-law, who was with him, was questioned and released.

Police later searched Chandler’s home in the 3600 block of 42nd Street and found $3,800 in cash and firearms, including a semiautomatic rifle and a 9-millimeter automatic pistol, Robinson said.

Chandler was turned over to the FBI and is being held in the downtown Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Robinson said Chandler is also suspected in eight bank holdups in Colorado and four in Los Angeles.
