Claremont McKenna College held its 42nd commencement Sunday on campus in Badgley Garden. Degrees were conferred on 223 students. An honorary degree was awarded to Dr. Marian Miner Cook, a member of the college’s board of trustees.

Gov. George Deukmejian concluded his commencement address by telling the graduates: “Challenge yourselves. Be the best you can be. Enrich your profession and your community with honesty, compassion and common sense. Remember that today’s limits are tomorrow’s frontiers.”

Other Graduations:

Mount St. Mary’s College celebrated its 60th commencement Sunday in the Circle and Chapel Terrace on the Chalon Campus. Sister Cecilia Louise Moore, chairwoman of the board of trustees, and college President Sister Magdalen Coughlin conferred degrees on 341 students. Independent Colleges of Southern California President Andrea Van de Kamp delivered the commencement address.

Pitzer College held its 25th commencement Sunday on the Pellissier Mall. Degrees were conferred on 165 students. The school’s first president, John W. Atherton, delivered the keynote address. Also speaking was recently freed Soviet refusenik Dr. Benjamin Charney, a visiting fellow at Pitzer.

Pomona College featured Raymond Barre, economist and former premier of France, as the keynote speaker at the school’s 96th commencement Sunday. Degrees were conferred on 350 students. Honorary degrees were awarded to Barre and John Brooks Slaughter, president of Occidental College.

Scripps College conferred nearly 125 degrees at its 59th commencement Sunday. Speakers included college President John H. Chandler and Josephine W. Heath, chairwoman of the Board of County Commissioners of Boulder County, Colo.

Harvey Mudd College featured Robert N. Bellah, professor of sociology at UC Berkeley, at its 31st commencement Sunday. Degrees were conferred on 109 students.
