John W. Bedell, a sociology professor and chairman of Cal State Fullerton’s Academic Senate, has been named the first recipient of a newly established “Educator of the Year Award,” to be given annually at the university.

The Cal State Fullerton chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, an academic honorary society, recently picked Bedell as its initial honoree. Bedell is scheduled to receive the award at a Phi Delta Kappa dinner on campus tonight.

Bedell is currently an elected member of the school board of the Fullerton School District, the city’s elementary school district. He was an acting associate vice chancellor for academic affairs of the 19-campus California State University system from 1984 to 1986.
