Top Cyclists to Compete at Balboa Park Velodrome

Some of the top cyclists in the world will compete in the San Diego stop of the Sundance Juice Sparkler Grand Prix of Cycling today through Saturday at the Balboa Park Velodrome.

Mark Gorski, former San Diegan and 1984 Olympic gold medalist, will compete along with 1988 national champion Ken Carpenter of San Diego and 1988 Olympic gold medalist Dan Frost of Denmark.

San Diego is the third stop of the seven-city grand prix series that offers $85,000 in prize money, including $10,000 per event.

The event will run from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the majority of finals scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Saturday.

SIGNINGS

Jennifer Grasso, a midfielder from Bonita High, has signed a national letter to play soccer for Cal State Dominguez Hills. Grasso was a second-team All-CIF selection her sophomore and junior years and is a member of the San Diego Select team and the Western Regional Team Pool.

Christian Heritage College announced the signing of five players for the 1989 basketball season.

John Bahnsen, 5-10 guard, Newport Beach; Vernando Butler, 5-11, sophomore guard, Anchorage, Alaska; Tony Mattingly, 6-4, guard, Anchorage, Alaska; Lance Roark, 6-1 guard, South Gate, Mich.; and Stefan Mumaw, 6-9 center, Irvine.

Christian Heritage also announced that Mark Kraatz, a two-time All-American, will stay in school and complete his final year of eligibility. Kraatz is just three courses short of graduating and was contemplating coaching high school basketball next year.

COLLEGE GOLF

U.S. International golfers Paul McGinley and Allison Shapcott have been invited to compete in the 1989 men’s and women’s NCAA individual championships. Shapcott, a senior from Bristol, England, will be making her second consecutive appearance at the NCAAs but her first as an individual.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

U.S. International announced the hiring of Jon Carne as its women’s coach. Carne, 23, replaces Kurt Donaldson, who resigned following the 1988 season.
