Andre Agassi scored two straight-set victories within four hours Friday, and top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden was upset by Jay Berger in the Italian Open tennis tournament at Rome.

Agassi, seeded No. 2, reached the semifinals and became the favorite after Wilander lost, 6-3, 6-4. Berger was beaten later in the day.

Wilander, who has not won a tournament since September and has slipped from No. 1 to No. 3 in the world, complained of his inability to concentrate. “I wasn’t really into the match at all,” he said.

Agassi began the day by completing a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico. The match had been suspended after the first set Thursday because of rain.

Agassi returned to the Foro Italico center court three hours later and overwhelmed eighth-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-3, 6-1.

In one of today’s semifinals, Agassi will face unseeded Sergi Bruguera, the surprising 18-year-old Spaniard who ousted Jimmy Connors in the third round and beat Mark Koevermans of the Netherlands, 6-2, 6-4, Friday.

Alberto Mancini of Argentina, the 11th-seeded player who beat Wilander and Boris Becker to win the Monte Carlo Open, reached the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Omar Camporese of Italy.

Mancini’s semifinal opponent will be Spaniard Jorde Arrese, who crushed a weary Berger, 6-1, 6-1, late Friday.

Berger, who because of Thursday’s rain was forced to play two full matches, had nothing left after upsetting Wilander. Arrese was coming off a full day’s rest.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany and second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina advanced to the semifinals of the German Open women’s tournament at West Berlin.

Graf, although bothered by a cold, swept past seventh-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy, 6-2, 6-0, while Sabatini defeated eight-seeded Sylvia Hanika of West Germany, 6-2, 6-0.

In the semifinals of the Virginia Slims event played on red clay, Graf will meet sixth-seeded Helen Kelesi of Canada, who overcame Barbara Paulus of Austria, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Sabatini will play unseeded Isabel Cueto of West Germany, who ousted Regina Rajchrtova of Czechoslovakia, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Top-seeded Cliff Drysdale of Australia scored a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Alex Metreveli of the Soviet Union to advance to the semifinals of the Dow World Senior Open at Bethesda, Md.

Drysdale, playing in his first tournament since last September, will face No. 3-seeded Colin Dibley of Australia, who eliminated Tom Okker of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-3.
