A man caught driving a car belonging to the family of a slain Clairemont woman has been booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder and auto theft, police said Monday.
Marco Antonio Torres, 20, of San Diego was arrested Sunday after officers saw him about noon in the 200 block of 47th Street driving one of two cars stolen from the home of Sung Yee Barr, 62, police said. Torres is expected to be arraigned later this week.
Barr was beaten to death last Tuesday, apparently with a baseball bat, in a robbery at her home during which her 26-year-old son, William, was also injured, police said.
William Barr was recovering Monday at Sharp Memorial Hospital.
Police said William Barr told investigators that two men attacked him and his mother with a baseball bat and that he played dead until the men left. He then crawled outside to the driveway and called for help.
Police said they spotted the Barrs’ two missing cars during the weekend and placed them under surveillance. No one was seen using the second car.
