Striped Bass Attracting Silverwood Fishermen

Largemouth bass are still active at most reservoirs, but striped bass have been the main attraction at Silverwood Lake, even though the largemouths are biting well there, too.

Fishing the channel with anchovies, Jim Lucas, a regular at the San Bernardino County reservoir, caught a 26 1/2-pound striper, and Cliff Whitehead of Apple Valley reeled in a 21-pounder.

LAKE MEAD--Winds to 65 m.p.h keeping fishing down. Die-hards catching some striped bass in Overton Arm and in Vegas Wash. Best bet for largemouth bass from Sandy Point to Iceberg Canyon.

BULLHEAD CITY--Striped bass to three pounds biting throughout river. Drifting anchovies best bet. Trout to four pounds being caught by same method. Lake: Largemouth bass and catfish providing most action, biting on standard baits.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina biting best at Red Hill, Riviera Keys and between Salt Creek and Niland Marina. Live bait best bet for fish averaging 10-12 pounds. Croaker best at Bombay Beach. Flathead catfish still active at Alamo River.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout bite good east of Cachuma Point. Power Bait and nightcrawlers best bets. Largemouth bass bite fair, with crank baits and plastic worms working best.

LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass biting in shallow water in coves. Stan Wyatt, 14-pound bass, released. Cliff Brockman, Los Angeles, eight-pound bass. Catfish bite still slow, but some big fish reported. Bob Petit, Oxnard, 15-pound catfish. Trout bite fair, with trollers using six colors and needlefish lure doing best. Wadleigh Arm best area. Red-ear perch biting on meel worms in shallows.

PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth and smallmouth bass best bet, biting off points and in coves to 30 feet. Trout bite good near ramp, biting on small spinners and Power Bait. Striped bass between six and 18 pounds picking up, biting mostly in marina.

LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass biting best in San Felicia Cove near drop-offs. Bob Murdoch, Van Nuys, 9 1/2- and 7 1/2-pound bass. Lou Zaimz, Simi Valley, four-pound bass. Crappie to a pound biting throughout lake. Catfish picking up.

BIG BEAR--Trout biting best, available throughout lake, with boaters doing best. Power Bait best bet.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Striped bass biting in channel on anchovies. Largemouth bass bite good. Ken Honingford, Ontario, 14 bass, 41 pounds, released. Lori Rietman, 22-pound catfish, caught in Miller Canyon. Crappie biting through Miller and Cleghorn Canyon. Two-pound tackle a must.

BISHOP AREA--North Lake and South Lake good for pan-sized brook trout and small browns. Worms best bet. Sabrina: Back side of lake best for fishermen using worms and Power Bait. Pleasant Valley Reservoir: rainbows and browns between 14-18 inches common. Power Bait and worms best for rainbows; small lures and crickets best for browns. Crowley: Most baits working for rainbows a bit over pan size.

JUNE LAKE AREA--June and Gull lakes good for bait fishermen using Power Bait, salmon eggs and worms, and trollers using five-seven colors doing well in June; those using three colors doing best at Gull. Rush Creek picking up, with 10-12 inch rainbows taking eggs and worms.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR--Bridgeport Lake best for trollers using broken-backed Rapalas and for float-tubers using leech patterns on the backside. Lower Twin: Good for occasional fish to 14 pounds, but pan-sized rainbows more common. Virginia Lakes: Ice almost completely gone, with most baits working for small rainbows. Robinson Creek: Small spinners and Power Bait working for pan-sized rainbows.
