Holding Parents Responsible

It is an outrage for the police to arrest Gloria Williams for failing in her duties as a mother just because of markings on the walls and pictures in some photo albums (“Mother Seized, Charged Over Son’s Street Gang Ties,” Part I, May 2). Graffiti on the bedroom walls is evidence of nothing at all, certainly not criminal conduct.

As for the claim by the assistant city attorney that the photos in the album “prove without any reasonable doubt that Williams failed as a parent,” that is sheer nonsense. If the people in the photos are known criminals, why don’t the police arrest the criminals instead of arresting Ms. Williams? This is guilt by association.

Now, if Ms. Williams was dealing in illegal drugs or conspiring to break the law, she should be arrested. No evidence of such activities was mentioned.

It’s time for the police to start working too, and arrest criminals instead of scapegoats.
