The United States defeated Spain 2-1 and West Germany beat Switzerland 2-1 today in the $900,000 World Team Cup tennis tournament.

Javier Sanchez gave Spain a 1-0 advantage against the United States, defeating Tim Mayotte 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). Aaron Krickstein got the U.S. even, downing Jordi Arrese 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-3.

In doubles, Rick Leach and Jim Pugh clinched the victory for the United States, beating Sanchez and Sergio Casal 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Boris Becker gave West Germany a 1-0 lead, defeating Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland 6-3, 6-4 in the opening match. But Claudio Mezzadri evened the score for Switzerland, beating Patrick Kuehnen 6-3, 6-1. Becker and Eric Jelen won the doubles, defeating Hlasek and Heinz Guenthardt 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
