Tennis Roundup : After Loss, Evert May Skip Paris

Chris Evert said Wednesday she may skip next week’s French Open and not finish this year’s circuit after an unexpected exit from the European Open at Geneva, Switzerland.

Unseeded 18-year-old Barbara Paulus of Austria surprised Evert, 6-4, 6-1, in a second-round match.

“I’m not in the right frame of mind for Paris,” said Evert, who was seeded No. 1. “This weekend, I’ll decide about the French Open, but if I’m not motivated, I’m not going. I would like to finish up the year but if it’s a struggle, I won’t.”

In other second-round matches, fourth-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain beat Laura Gildemeister of Peru, 6-0, 6-3, and Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union upset eighth-seeded Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2.

In first-round matches, Celine Cohen of Switzerland beat sixth-seeded Lori McNeil, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria downed Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union, 7-5, 6-0.

Argentina upset Sweden, 2-1, and Australia swept Czechoslovakia, 3-0, in the World Team Cup at Dusseldorf, West Germany.

The unexpected victory over the defending champions gave Argentina a 2-0 record in the Red Group, and it needs only one point from Friday’s match against Czechoslovakia to reach the semifinals.

Australia and Sweden are both 1-1, and Czechoslovakia is 0-2.

Sweden’s Stefan Edberg routed Guillermo Perez-Roldan, 6-1, 6-1. However, Argentina’s Martin Jaite beat Jonas Svensson, 6-2, 6-3, before Gustavo Luza and Javier Frana outlasted Edberg and Anders Jarryd, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
