Santa Ana Officer Fatally Shoots Fleeing Suspect

A Santa Ana police officer on Thursday shot and killed a fleeing suspect wanted in connection with two robberies earlier this year, a police spokesman said.

The officer fired two shots at the man, one of which struck him in the back, after the suspect appeared to be reaching for an object in his waistband, Lt. Hugh Mooney said. The man was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead. His identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.

The officer’s name was not released.

Mooney said police later found a knife tucked in the suspect’s waistband.

Police confronted the suspect after an informant called to report that the man was in the area of 2000 W. Civic Center Drive. When an officer arrived, Mooney said, the suspect began to run.
