Injury Might Sideline UCLA’s Steve Lewis

UCLA’s Steve Lewis has reinjured a hamstring muscle and is questionable for the NCAA track and field championship next week in Provo, Utah.

Lewis, the Olympic gold medalist in the 400 meters, strained a hamstring in a workout Tuesday.

“The injury isn’t quite as severe as we thought it was,” said UCLA Coach Bob Larsen, who added that Lewis’ status won’t be determined for a few days.

UCLA is the two-time defending NCAA champion. However, if Lewis is unavailable, the Bruins’ chances of repeating are slim.

Moreover, UCLA has yet to get an NCAA meet qualifying time for its 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams. With Lewis hurt, Larsen said it’s doubtful whether UCLA will even try to qualify in a Sunday meet at Mt. San Antonio College.
